Satin Dubbing is a fly-tying material made from 100% Satin Rabbit hair fibers.
Satin Rabbits and an American breed of rabbits known for their distinctive "sheen" that got them the Satin name. Originating in Indiana nine decades ago now, these rabbits have been developed for both fur and meat purposes.
Their sheen is complemented by a wide range of natural colors. A "wild" colored rabbit would be considered Agouti in color, meaning it has five bands of color along the hair shaft. Through decades of development, satin breeds have been able to isolate specific genes for striking colors like lilac or red.
For example, a "Red Satin Rabbit" is an agouti rabbit, but it has genes that modify the five colors along the hair shaft. The wideband genes widen the yellow/orange band of color, and the non extensions genes prevent dark color from extending along the base of the hair shaft. There are even more complicated colors, but I mostly see Red Satin Rabbits.
